Hispanic/Latino Outreach (HLO)
The HLO initiative seeks to build upon the STOP 2 program by developing messages designed to address the specific needs of the Hispanic/Latino communities. Building upon qualitative research, HLO incorporates ethnically relevant messages and themes into gun violence prevention materials for distribution, and addresses the needs of the Hispanic/Latino communities.

Spanish Language Media Campaign
The Hispanic/Latino Outreach Initiative's fourth Spanish-language media campaign is currently underway in Philadelphia. The campaign began the week of June 30th and will run through July 17, 2008.

Like previous campaigns in Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas/Ft. Worth, the Center collaborated with the Hispanic Communications Network (HCN) to air sixty-second Spanish prime-time radio spots the week of July 7, 2008 on WEMG-AM and WUMBA-AM whose listernership extends to the greater Philadelphia metropolitan area. Through HCN, the Center also provided print advertisements in the three leading Spanish-language newspapers Al Dia, El Sol Latino, and Impacto Latino from July 2-July 17, 2008.

Both print and broadcast advertisements focus on the importance of keeping families and communities safe from gun violence. The radio spots educate listeners about the dangers of guns in the home, while the print ads appeal to mothers and families whose worlds are shattered by the loss of a loved one due to the accessibility of a gun.

Additionally, in Philadelphia, the Center conducted a focused distribution of materials, including the newly updated Spanish and English ALTO 2 brochures, A Day in the Neighborhood, computer games, voter education pieces, and other materials to a database of more than 270 agencies, organizations, churches, law enforcement, and businesses that will support the campaign by making our gun violence prevention materials available to their clients and visitors. It is expected that we will distribute well over 15,000 pieces of information during this campaign.

The Center also created a Spanish-language logo and a URL www.centrobrady.org, which links directly to our Spanish-content pages.

To boost the campaign and the grassroots effort, staff and local activists sponsored a booth at La Fiesta Hispana at Penn's Landing July 12-13 to disseminate materials, engage visitors (in English and Spanish), and reach out to include Hispanics/Latinos in the fight to end gun violence. The annual Fiesta is the largest public gathering for Hispanics/Latinos in Pennsylvania that boasts over 10,000 attendees.
