About Stop 2
Everyday in the United States, 80 people die in shootings associated with "suicide, homicide, and unintentional injuries." Ten of those who die are children. The epidemic of firearm violence affects us all. Health care providers are natural messengers of safety/health information and have the daily opportunity to speak to patients/clients and their families about guns they are likely to come in contact with in their own homes or in the homes of relatives or friends they visit.
Steps To Prevent Firearm Injury In The Home (STOP 2), launched by the Center in 1998, is a counseling tool that prepares health care providers across a wide range of disciplines (nurses, social workers, psychologists, health educators, counselors, etc.) to talk with patients/clients and their families about the dangers of keeping a gun in the home. The key concept is to assist the user in incorporating gun violence prevention in their routine injury prevention counseling.
Assisting the Brady Center in developing these materials was a technical advisory committee representing the following organizations:

Organization of Chinese Americans
University of Maryland School of Nursing
The program is delivered in the form of a kit that contains information about toddlers, children, preteens, adults, and senior citizens - the entire family. STOP 2 also contains information about minority/diverse populations.
STOP 2/ALTO 2 Latino/Hispanic Outreach
In 2004, the Brady Center developed materials for dissemination to Hispanic/Latino communities across the country that contain information about the current threat of gun violence to this affected community as well as ways to prevent gun violence in the home and in the community. These two-color materials include a tri-fold brochure and a poster, which are free of charge, including shipping and handling. Click here to order.
